Overview
London is one of the most established family office centres in the world. Families use it for proximity to asset managers, private banks, private equity and venture capital, English law and courts, and an advisory market experienced in cross-border succession. The flip side is that the UK taxes its residents on worldwide income and gains and applies inheritance tax to long-term residents' worldwide estates, so a London office is a structuring decision that should be taken together with residence planning. Families with assets held in the Channel Islands often run investment oversight from London while trusts and PTCs sit in Jersey or Guernsey.
There is no single family office exemption in UK financial services law. Section 19 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 prohibits carrying on a regulated activity by way of business without authorisation or exemption. A family office managing investments, advising or arranging deals for family members must therefore work through the perimeter: whether its activities are regulated at all, whether they are carried on by way of business under the Carrying on Regulated Activities by Way of Business Order 2001, and whether exclusions apply, most commonly the Article 69 group exclusion in the Regulated Activities Order where the office acts for companies in the same group. Risk areas include charging non-family clients, inviting paid co-investors, raising capital for investee companies or lending to relatives. An AIFMD analysis is also needed: FCA perimeter guidance (PERG 16) reflects the position that family investment vehicles investing the private wealth of a family without raising external capital are not alternative investment funds. Offices serving several unrelated families normally need Part 4A permission or act as an appointed representative of an authorised regulatory host.
The tax backdrop changed fundamentally on 6 April 2025. The remittance basis for non-domiciled individuals was abolished. Individuals who become UK resident after ten consecutive years of non-residence can claim 100% relief on foreign income and gains for their first four years of residence (the FIG regime); Overseas Workday Relief runs for the same four years, capped at the lower of £300,000 or 30% of employment income. Former remittance basis users may designate pre-April 2025 foreign income and gains under the Temporary Repatriation Facility at 12% for 2025-26 and 2026-27 and 15% for 2027-28, and can rebase foreign assets held on 5 April 2017. Inheritance tax now depends on long-term residence: anyone UK resident for at least 10 of the previous 20 tax years is within scope on worldwide assets, with a tail of three to ten years after leaving. Non-UK assets settled into trust are within relevant property charges while the settlor is long-term resident, with transitional rules and a cap for certain pre-30 October 2024 excluded property trusts.
From 6 April 2026, 100% business property relief and agricultural property relief are limited to a combined £1 million per individual, with 50% relief above that; AIM and other 'not listed' shares receive 50% relief in all cases. Budget 2025 made the unused allowance transferable between spouses and civil partners and froze it, together with the £325,000 nil-rate band, until 5 April 2031. From 6 April 2027 unused pension funds will fall into the estate. Dividend tax rates rose by 2 points from 6 April 2026 (ordinary 10.75%, upper 35.75%), and savings and property income rates rise in April 2027. These changes make the family investment company and the choice of trust jurisdiction central to London-based planning.

Structure designs
Single family office company (Ltd or LLP)
A UK company or LLP employing the family's investment, finance and administration team, serving only the family's group entities. Suits families wanting a London operating base without FCA authorisation, provided the perimeter analysis supports it.
Family investment company (FIC)
A private company with different share classes: founders keep voting shares and directorships, while children or trusts hold growth shares. Profits bear corporation tax at up to 25% and most dividends received are exempt, deferring personal tax until extraction. Suits UK-resident families planning long-term value transfer.
UK or offshore trust with a private trust company
A discretionary trust, often in Jersey, Guernsey or Bermuda, with a PTC board on which family and advisers sit. Since April 2025 protection for non-UK trusts depends on long-term residence status, so suits families with non-resident settlors or a clear IHT and succession plan.
FCA-authorised multi-family office
A firm holding Part 4A permission to manage or advise on investments for several unrelated families. Suits families that want to share costs or accept outside clients, accepting capital, reporting and SM&CR obligations.
Appointed representative of a regulatory host
The family office operates regulated activities under the authorisation and supervision of a principal firm. Suits offices that need limited regulated permissions quickly, though the FCA has tightened principal oversight rules.
Limited partnership for co-investments
An English or Scottish limited partnership or private fund LP for club deals with other families. Suits families co-investing in private markets, subject to AIFMD and collective investment scheme analysis.
Step-by-step process
- 1
Residence and tax mapping
Review each family member's residence history, FIG eligibility, long-term residence status for inheritance tax and existing trusts before anything is transferred to the UK.
- 2
Perimeter and structure design
Decide which entities will hold assets and which will employ staff, document the FCA perimeter analysis and select FIC, trust and PTC arrangements.
- 3
Incorporation and registrations
Incorporate the company or LLP, complete identity verification and PSC filings, register trusts on the TRS and register for corporation tax and PAYE.
- 4
Authorisation where needed
For an MFO, prepare the FCA application with business plan, financial projections, policies and senior manager applications, or agree terms with a regulatory host.
- 5
Banking, people and premises
Open UK bank and custody accounts, recruit the CIO and finance team, set up office premises and, for overseas hires, a sponsor licence and visas.
- 6
Governance and annual cycle
Adopt a family constitution, investment committee charter and reporting calendar, and review the structure annually against tax changes such as the 2026 and 2027 IHT reforms.
Typical documents

Enquire with Legal WealthFrequently asked questions
Does a single family office in London need FCA authorisation?
Not necessarily. There is no family office exemption, but an SFO that does not carry on regulated activities by way of business, or that relies on exclusions such as the Article 69 group exclusion, can operate without authorisation. Charging third parties, managing money for unrelated families or raising external capital usually brings it within the perimeter.
What replaced the non-dom regime?
From 6 April 2025 the UK moved to a residence-based system. New arrivals who have not been UK resident in any of the previous ten tax years can claim 100% relief on foreign income and gains for four years. After that, worldwide income and gains are taxed on the arising basis.
When does inheritance tax apply to worldwide assets?
When an individual is a long-term resident, meaning UK resident for at least 10 of the previous 20 tax years. After leaving, the exposure continues for between three and ten years depending on how long the person was resident.
What changed for business property relief in April 2026?
100% BPR and APR are capped at a combined £1 million per individual, with 50% relief above that, giving an effective 20% inheritance tax rate on the excess. The allowance can transfer to a surviving spouse or civil partner, and AIM shares receive 50% relief.
Is a family investment company still worthwhile?
Often, for UK-resident families. Profits are taxed at corporation tax rates and most dividends received are exempt, so value can compound inside the company, while growth shares held by children or trusts can shift future value out of the founders' estates. Extraction is taxed at the higher dividend rates applying from April 2026, so modelling is essential.
Can a family get a UK visa by setting up a family office?
No dedicated route exists, and the Tier 1 Investor visa closed in February 2022. Family members usually rely on their own status or routes such as Global Talent or Innovator Founder, while non-UK staff of the office may be sponsored under the Skilled Worker route by a licensed employer. See our UK residence page for current options.
