Overview
Bahrain introduced the Golden Residency in February 2022 to attract and retain investors, skilled residents and retirees. The permit removes the need for an employer or local sponsor, allows unlimited entry and exit, and extends to the holder's family. It is administered by the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs directorate of the Ministry of Interior, and applications are submitted online.
The most significant recent change came in late November 2025, when the NPRA lowered the minimum real estate value from BHD 200,000 to BHD 130,000, a reduction of about 35%. The NPRA described the move as improving competitiveness while preserving the programme's standards. The other routes were left unchanged: residents with at least five years of employment in Bahrain and a monthly salary above BHD 2,000; retirees who worked in Bahrain for 15 years and receive a monthly pension of at least BHD 2,000; non-resident retirees with a monthly pension above BHD 4,000; and talented individuals or entrepreneurs who make a significant contribution to the economy or society.
For property-based applicants, the key document is a title deed showing a value of at least BHD 130,000 in the applicant's name. Foreign ownership is generally permitted in designated freehold areas. Supporting evidence typically includes six months of bank statements and a Bahrain-issued medical insurance certificate. Government charges are modest: a non-refundable BHD 5 application fee and BHD 300 on issuance, payable again on renewal of the 10-year term.
Golden Residency does not lead to citizenship, and Bahraini naturalisation remains highly restricted. It is best understood as a stable, low-cost Gulf base for families who value proximity to Saudi Arabia, a well-regulated financial sector and a moderate cost of living, and it can complement residence or business arrangements elsewhere in the region.

What is the current property threshold?
BHD 130,000, about USD 345,000. The NPRA reduced it from BHD 200,000 in November 2025.
How much are the government fees?
A non-refundable BHD 5 application fee and a BHD 300 issuance fee. Medical insurance and property costs are separate.
How long is the permit valid?
It is issued for 10 years and can be renewed as long as the holder continues to meet the route's conditions, such as keeping the qualifying property.
Can I work in Bahrain on Golden Residency?
Yes. Holders can work without a separate employer-sponsored work visa, and can own businesses subject to sector rules.
Can my family join me?
Yes. Golden Residency includes family sponsorship. The NPRA confirms which dependants qualify, and we prepare the supporting civil documents.
Does it lead to Bahraini citizenship?
No. Golden Residency is a residence permit; naturalisation is separate, discretionary and rarely granted.
